I make artwork that is quiet and direct. My approach is to embrace simplicity with a playful and thoughtful perspective. My guides are ease in the process of making and the resulting objects effortlessly providing their function.
The candle holder- lighting a candle for any reason brings forth comfort, reflection, and connection.
The vase- picking, giving and/or receiving, and arranging flowers is an act of honoring nature, the spirit of another person, and beauty.
My path is intuitive while allowing myself to make both rational and irrational decisions. I relish the exploration of building with clay in lines, planes, solid forms, and empty spaces while embracing symmetry or asymmetry, pressing rhythmically with my fingers, exploring geometry, gesture, and creating composition through color and form.
Going beyond formalism (how it is made and what it looks like) my work offers an emotional release or psychological exhale for myself during the process of making or to anyone as a ritual object in their home. Somewhere between contemporary minimalist art and design and the richness of folk art, my work honors core human needs.
Claire Hedden works in her studio and teaches ceramics to youth, university students, and adults enjoying the balance of solitude and community. She lives in Normal, Illinois. She studied ceramics earning her BFA and MFA from NYSCC at Alfred University and a Post Baccalaureate from UMASS-Dartmouth.
